Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 2 cups pecans
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 (14 ounce) bag caramels
  • 1 1/3 cups water (or as called for by your cake mix)
  • 1/3 cup oil (or as called for by your cake mix)
  • 3 eggs (or as called for by your cake mix)
  • 1 (18 ounce) box German chocolate cake mix

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cake Mix:
Follow the instructions on the German chocolate cake mix box to prepare the batter, incorporating water, oil, and eggs as directed.
  2. Bake the First Layer:
Pour half of the prepared batter into a 13×9 inch baking pan. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.

In a double boiler, combine the caramels, evaporated milk, and melted butter. Stir constantly until the caramels are completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Assemble the Layers:
Pour the melted caramel mixture over the cooled cake layer. Sprinkle 1 cup of pecans and 1 cup of chocolate chips evenly over the caramel.
  5. Finish the Cake:
Pour the remaining cake batter over the caramel, pecans, and chocolate chips. Spread it evenly to cover the entire surface.
  6. Bake the Final Cake:
Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
