These Best Ever Homemade Flour Tortillas are incredibly simple to make and boast an unbeatable taste and texture. Crafted with basic ingredients, this recipe ensures a delightful culinary experience.

Homemade Flour Tortillas

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, vegetable oil, or oil with a neutral flavor
  • 1 cup warm water

How To Make Homemade Flour Tortillas:

By Hand:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix the dry ingredients thoroughly using a durable silicone spatula or wooden spoon.
  2. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add oil and water. Stir from the bottom to the top until a shaggy ball of dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and knead for 1-2 minutes until it becomes smooth. Proceed to step 3 for the rest of the recipe.

Using a Mixer:

  1. In a mixer bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Use the dough hook to mix the dry ingredients until well combined.
  2. Add oil and water while mixing at medium speed. Once the dough starts coming together, reduce the speed to low and continue until the dough becomes smooth.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface, divide it into 16 equal portions, shape each into a ball, and let them rest for at least 15 minutes.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Roll each dough ball into a 6-7 inch circle, cooking for 45 seconds to a minute on each side until pale brown spots appear.
  5. Stack the cooked tortillas in a covered bowl or zip-lock bag to keep them tender.
  6. When ready to use, microwave stacked tortillas with a damp paper towel at the bottom for 15-30 seconds.
  7. Store at room temperature for 24 hours, in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze with parchment paper separating them.

Description and Tips:

Enjoy the satisfaction of making your own soft and flavorful flour tortillas with this easy-to-follow recipe. The combination of all-purpose flour, olive oil, and a hint of baking powder yields a dough that rolls out beautifully and cooks to perfection.

Tips:

  • Allow the dough to rest after shaping into balls; this helps relax the gluten and results in more tender tortillas.
  • When rolling out the tortillas, keep the work surface and rolling pin lightly floured to prevent sticking.
  • Control the skillet heat to achieve a golden-brown surface with a few characteristic spots, ensuring a delicious, homemade flavor.
  • Microwave the tortillas with a damp paper towel to keep them moist and pliable when ready to serve.
  • Experiment with different oils for varied flavors or add a pinch of your favorite herbs to customize the taste of your tortillas.
