The Outback Steakhouse Blooming Onion is a legendary appetizer known for its crispy, golden-brown exterior and its unique “blooming” presentation. This recipe captures the essence of the famous dish, allowing you to recreate it at home with ease. A large white onion is carefully sliced to resemble a flower, then coated in a seasoned flour mixture and fried to perfection. The result is a mouthwatering snack that’s perfect for sharing with friends and family.

Ingredients:

  • Large white onion: The star of the dish, sliced and transformed into a blooming onion.
  • All-purpose flour: Forms the base of the coating mixture, providing structure and texture.
  • Paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper: A blend of spices that adds flavor and depth to the coating mixture.
  • Eggs and milk: Used to create the batter that coats the onion, ensuring a crispy exterior when fried.
  • Vegetable oil: Used for frying the blooming onion to a crispy golden-brown finish.
  • Chipotle, Thousand Island, or other dipping sauce (optional): Provides a delicious accompaniment for dipping the fried onion petals.

Tips:

  1. Prepare the onion: Carefully slice the onion to resemble a flower, making vertical cuts around the onion and gently opening up the “petals” with your fingers.
  2. Coat the onion: Dip the onion in the seasoned flour mixture, then the egg and milk mixture, and finally back into the flour mixture for a double coating.
  3. Chill the onion: Place the coated onion in the freezer for 30-60 minutes before frying to help set the coating and prevent it from falling off during frying.
  4. Fry at the right temperature: Heat the oil to 350°F before frying the onion to ensure it cooks evenly and develops a crispy exterior.
  5. Fry in batches: Fry the onion in batches to avoid overcrowding the fryer, which can lower the oil temperature and result in soggy onion petals.
  6. Drain well: After frying, transfer the fried onion to a plate lined with paper towels to drain off excess oil.
  7. Serve hot: Serve the blooming onion immediately while it’s still hot and crispy, accompanied by your favorite dipping sauce for a delicious appetizer that’s sure to impress.
