Indulge in the delightful flavors of Southern Tea Cake Cookies, a true Southern delicacy that embodies the essence of warmth and hospitality. These delectable treats, infused with the aromatic notes of nutmeg, the richness of butter, and the subtle sweetness of vanilla, offer a taste of Southern tradition in every bite.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

How To Make Southern Tea Cake Cookies:

  1. Prepare Dry Ingredients: Begin by whisking together the flour, salt, and baking soda in a medium-sized bowl. This ensures even distribution of the leavening agents and salt, providing a balanced flavor profile.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In the bowl of your mixer, combine the room temperature butter and granulated sugar. Beat them together on high speed until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and smooth, typically taking about 4-5 minutes. This step is crucial for creating a tender and airy texture in the cookies.
  3. Incorporate Wet Ingredients: Reduce the mixer speed to medium and add the room temperature egg and pure vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat until the ingredients are well combined, creating a creamy and homogenous batter.
  4. Add Dry Ingredients: With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the flour mixture to the batter in three intervals, beating after each addition. This gradual incorporation ensures that the dry ingredients are evenly distributed without overmixing, resulting in tender cookies.
  5. Chill the Dough: Transfer the cookie dough to a Ziploc bag and refrigerate it for at least one hour. Chilling the dough helps solidify the butter, preventing excessive spreading during baking and ensuring well-shaped cookies.
  6. Preheat and Line: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. This prevents the cookies from sticking to the pan and facilitates easy cleanup.
  7. Shape and Bake: Using a measuring tablespoon, portion out the cookie dough and roll it into balls. Flatten each ball slightly with your thumb and place them on the prepared cookie sheet, leaving space between each cookie for spreading during baking.
  8. Bake to Perfection: Bake the cookies for 9-11 minutes or until they turn golden brown around the edges. Once baked, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Recipe Tips:

  • Ensure that all ingredients are at room temperature before starting to ensure proper mixing and incorporation.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain their freshness for up to a week.
  • For longer storage, freeze the cookies by tightly wrapping them and storing them in the freezer for up to three months. Thaw them at room temperature before serving.
