This southern fried chicken recipe is a true classic, delivering the ultimate combination of crispy, golden-brown coating and juicy, tender meat. Perfectly seasoned with a blend of spices, this fried chicken is sure to become a family favorite. With just a few simple ingredients and straightforward steps, even beginners can achieve delicious results.

Ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Black pepper
  • Paprika
  • Garlic salt
  • Poultry seasoning mix
  • Buttermilk
  • Eggs

How To Make It:

  1. Prepare the Coating: In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the all-purpose flour, black pepper, paprika, garlic salt, and poultry seasoning mix. Seal the bag and shake well to thoroughly mix the ingredients.
  2. Coat the Chicken: Place the chicken pieces into the bag of seasoned flour and shake the bag to coat all the pieces evenly.
  3. Dip in Egg Mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the buttermilk and beaten eggs. Remove each chicken piece from the flour mixture and dip it into the egg mixture, ensuring it is fully coated.
  4. Coat with Flour Mixture Again: After dipping in the egg mixture, return each chicken piece to the seasoned flour mixture, coating it once more and shaking off any excess flour.
  5. Fry the Chicken: Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet to 375°F (190°C). Carefully add the coated chicken pieces to the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Brown the chicken on each side until it reaches a crispy, golden-brown exterior.
  6. Finish Cooking: Once both sides are browned, reduce the heat of the pan and allow the chicken to continue cooking for 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the pieces. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165°F (74°C) before serving.
  7. Serve: Drain the fried chicken pieces on paper towels to remove excess oil, then serve hot and enjoy!

Recipe Tips:

  • Make sure the oil is hot enough before adding the chicken to ensure a crispy coating. Test the temperature by dropping a small piece of bread into the oil – if it sizzles and browns quickly, the oil is ready.
  • For extra flavor, you can marinate the chicken pieces in buttermilk for a few hours or overnight before coating them in the seasoned flour mixture.
  • Serve the fried chicken with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, coleslaw, cornbread, or macaroni and cheese, for a classic southern meal.
