The Smothered Cube Steak Burger is a flavorful twist on a classic burger. The addition of thinly sliced and caramelized onions on the bottom side of the patty creates a delicious crust, enhancing the overall taste and texture.

Smothered Cube Steak Burger

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 4-8 slices American cheese
  • Mayo, mustard, and pickles, for serving
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted

How to Make:

  1. Combine the onion slices and 1 teaspoon of salt in a bowl, toss to combine. Let sit for 30 minutes. Squeeze out excess liquid from the onions using a clean dish towel.
  2. Divide onions into 4 mounds on a baking sheet. Form ground beef into 4 balls, place on top of onions, and flatten into 4-inch patties. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Melt butter with oil in a skillet over medium heat. Transfer the patties, onion side down. Cook for 6-8 minutes until onions are golden brown. Flip the burgers, increase heat, and cook the second side until well browned.
  4. Add 1-2 slices of cheese to each burger, allowing it to melt. Spread mayo, mustard, and pickles on the top buns. Place each burger on a bottom bun. Serve immediately.

  1. Onion Caramelization: Take the time to caramelize the onions thoroughly. This adds a rich sweetness and depth of flavor to the burger.
  2. Cheese Melting: Adding cheese to the burgers while still in the skillet ensures a gooey and perfectly melted consistency.
  3. Bun Toasting: Toasting the buns adds a delightful crunch and prevents them from becoming soggy under the juicy burger.
  4. Condiment Variation: Feel free to customize condiments based on personal preference. Add lettuce, tomato, or other favorite toppings for extra freshness.
