This Slow Cooker Orange Chicken is a delightful dish that combines sweet and savory flavors with a hint of citrus. The use of orange marmalade gives the chicken a rich, tangy glaze, while the soy sauce and sesame oil add depth and umami. Perfect for a hassle-free meal, this recipe allows you to enjoy the flavors of takeout right at home with minimal effort.

Slow Cooker Orange Chicken

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 ½ to 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • ⅓ cup cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon pepper, or to taste
  • 1 cup orange marmalade
  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon ground ginger, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder or 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds, lightly toasted (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons green onions, thinly sliced, for garnish
  • Orange slices, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Slow Cooker:
  • Line a 3 to 6-quart slow cooker with a liner if using one for easy cleanup.
  • Drizzle 1 tablespoon of olive oil over the bottom of the slow cooker or liner.
  1. Coat the Chicken:
  • In a large, gallon-sized zip-top plastic bag, add the chicken pieces, cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Seal the bag and toss to coat the chicken evenly.
  • Evenly distribute the coated chicken pieces in the slow cooker; set aside.
  1. Make the Sauce:
  • In a 2-cup measuring cup or medium bowl, combine the orange marmalade, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stir until well mixed.
  • Pour the sauce mixture over the chicken, using a spoon to ensure all pieces are coated evenly.
  1. Cook the Chicken:
  • Cover and cook on high for about 2 hours or on low for about 4 hours. If cooking on high, start checking at 90 minutes; if cooking on low, start checking at 3 hours. Cook until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  1. Finish and Serve:
  • Once done, transfer the chicken to a plate. Spoon as much of the extra cooking sauce over the top as desired.
  • Garnish with toasted sesame seeds, sliced green onions, and optional orange slices.
  • Serve immediately.

Description and Tips

Tips for Success:

  • Chicken Coating: Ensure the chicken is evenly coated with cornstarch to help the sauce adhere better and create a slightly crispy texture.
  • Slow Cooker Variance: Cooking times can vary depending on your slow cooker. Always check the internal temperature to ensure the chicken is thoroughly cooked.
  • Sauce Distribution: Stir the sauce well before pouring it over the chicken to ensure an even distribution of flavors.
  • Toasting Sesame Seeds: For an added layer of flavor, lightly toast the sesame seeds before garnishing. Simply add them to a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
  • Garnishing: Green onions and orange slices not only add a pop of color but also enhance the fresh, vibrant flavors of the dish.

Enjoy this mouth-watering Orange Chicken over rice or noodles, and savor the blend of sweet and savory with every bite!
