This homemade Teriyaki Sauce is a savory, slightly sweet sauce with a hint of citrus and warmth from ginger and garlic. It’s perfect for glazing grilled meats, tossing with stir-fried vegetables, or drizzling over rice dishes. With an ideal balance of salty, sweet, and tangy flavors, this sauce is quick to make and customizable to suit any dish.

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup soy sauce (for a savory base)
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup orange juice (or pineapple juice, for a hint of sweetness and tang; substitute with more water if preferred)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar

Slurry (for thickening)

  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Base Sauce
  • In a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, ½ cup water, orange or pineapple juice (if using), garlic, ginger, and brown sugar.
  • Turn the heat to medium and allow the mixture to simmer gently, whisking for about 2 minutes or until the brown sugar fully dissolves.
  1. Create the Slurry
  • In a separate small bowl, mix the cold water and cornstarch to make a smooth slurry. This will thicken the sauce to a glossy consistency.
  1. Thicken the Sauce
  • Once the sauce is at a low boil, gradually whisk in the slurry a little at a time, stirring constantly. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  1. Serve or Store
  • Use immediately or allow the sauce to cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Tips for the Best Teriyaki Sauce

  • Juice Options: Use orange or pineapple juice for a fruity sweetness, or go for water if you prefer a more traditional, savory profile.
  • Custom Sweetness: For a sweeter sauce, add an extra tablespoon of brown sugar or a teaspoon of honey.
  • Versatile Use: This sauce is perfect as a glaze for grilled meats, mixed into stir-fry dishes, or served as a dipping sauce.

This versatile, flavorful Teriyaki Sauce is easy to whip up and adds a savory, slightly sweet twist to your favorite meals!
