These scalloped potatoes, also known as potatoes au gratin, are a classic comfort food dish that never fails to impress. Creamy, cheesy, and perfectly seasoned, they make a delicious side dish for any meal or a satisfying main course on their own. This recipe has stood the test of time, garnering rave reviews from countless home cooks who have tried it. Whether you’re serving them for a special occasion or a casual family dinner, these scalloped potatoes are sure to be a hit.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Dash of cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese, for sprinkling on top
  • Paprika (optional, for color)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Sauce: In a small saucepan, melt butter and blend in flour. Let it sit for a minute, then gradually add cold milk, stirring constantly with a whisk. Season the sauce with salt and a dash of cayenne pepper. Cook the sauce on low heat until smooth and boiling, stirring occasionally with a whisk.
  2. Add Cheese: Once the sauce is smooth and boiling, reduce the heat and stir in the grated sharp cheddar cheese until it’s fully melted and incorporated into the sauce.
  3. Layer Potatoes: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place half of the sliced potatoes in a lightly greased one-quart casserole dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with a second layer of potatoes and cheese sauce.
  4. Bake: Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top of the assembled dish. Optionally, sprinkle some paprika over the cheese for added color. Bake the scalloped potatoes uncovered for about 1 hour at 350°F, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Tips:

  • Use a mandoline slicer for uniform and thin potato slices, ensuring even cooking.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding minced garlic or chopped fresh herbs to the cheese sauce.
  • Allow the scalloped potatoes to rest for a few minutes after baking before serving to allow the sauce to thicken slightly.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
