Sausage, peppers, and onions is a classic Italian-American dish known for its hearty and flavorful combination of sweet and savory ingredients. In this recipe, Italian sausages are browned to perfection and then simmered with colorful bell peppers, onions, garlic, crushed tomatoes, and Italian seasoning, creating a mouthwatering dish that’s perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner or a casual gathering with friends and family.

Ingredients:

  • Italian sausages: Choose your favorite variety, whether it’s mild, sweet, or spicy, to suit your taste preferences.
  • Olive oil: Used for sautéing the sausages and vegetables, adding richness and flavor to the dish.
  • Bell peppers: Red, orange, and yellow bell peppers add vibrant color and sweet flavor to the dish.
  • Minced garlic: Enhances the savory taste of the dish with its aromatic flavor.
  • Crushed tomatoes: Provide a rich and tangy base for the sauce, adding depth of flavor and a silky texture.
  • Onion: Sliced onions add sweetness and complexity to the dish, complementing the flavors of the peppers and sausages.
  • Italian seasoning: A blend of dried herbs like oregano, basil, and thyme, adding classic Italian flavor to the dish.
  • Salt and pepper: Season to taste to enhance the flavors of the ingredients.

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Brown the Italian sausages on all sides until they develop a golden crust, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers to the skillet, sautéing them until they begin to soften and caramelize.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the crushed tomatoes and Italian seasoning to the skillet, along with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Return the browned sausages to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce and vegetables.
  7. Cover the skillet and simmer the sausage, peppers, and onions for 20-25 minutes, or until the sausages are cooked through and the vegetables are tender.
  8. Serve the dish hot, either on its own or with crusty bread or pasta for a satisfying meal.

Tips:

  1. You can use any combination of bell peppers you like, depending on your preference or what’s available.
  2. For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of red wine or balsamic vinegar to the sauce.
  3. Feel free to customize the dish by adding other vegetables such as mushrooms, zucchini, or cherry tomatoes.
  4. Leftovers can be refrigerated and enjoyed the next day, or used as filling for sandwiches, wraps, or pasta dishes.
