This hearty, comforting dish is a timeless classic that combines tender macaroni, savory ground beef, and flavorful tomatoes for a meal that satisfies every time. Perfect for weeknights or feeding a crowd, this easy one-pot recipe delivers nostalgia and deliciousness in every bite. With simple ingredients and customizable seasoning, it’s a dish you’ll come back to again and again.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 lb macaroni
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • Seasonings: garlic salt, pepper, chili powder, and hot sauce (to taste)
  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans whole stewed tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • Tomato juice, as needed

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Macaroni
Prepare the macaroni to al dente according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. Brown the Beef
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef and diced onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Season the Meat
Season the beef mixture with garlic salt, pepper, chili powder, and a splash of hot sauce (if desired). Adjust the seasoning to suit your taste.
  4. Mash the Tomatoes
In a large bowl, use a potato masher to break down the stewed tomatoes into smaller chunks. Add the mashed tomatoes and ketchup to the beef mixture, stirring to combine.
  5. Mix in the Macaroni
Add the drained macaroni to the skillet or Dutch oven, stirring everything together until well combined. If you prefer a saucier goulash, pour in tomato juice as needed to reach your desired consistency.
  6. Taste and Adjust
Taste the goulash and adjust the seasonings, adding more chili powder or hot sauce if you like a kick.
  7. Serve and Enjoy
Serve hot and enjoy! For leftovers, consider adding a splash of tomato juice before reheating to revive the sauce.

Tips for Perfect Goulash:

  • Tomato Juice Hack: If you like your goulash extra saucy, always keep tomato juice on hand to stir into the dish, especially when reheating leftovers.
  • Customizable Add-ins: Feel free to add diced bell peppers, canned corn, or shredded cheese for extra flavor and texture.
  • Make it a One-Pot Dish: Cook the macaroni directly in the tomato mixture by adding extra liquid and simmering until tender. This saves cleanup and enhances flavor.

This Old-Fashioned Goulash is simple, satisfying, and guaranteed to become a staple in your kitchen!
