This Old-Fashioned Butter Cake is a timeless classic that brings a rich, buttery flavor to each bite. The combination of simple ingredients creates a moist and tender cake with a delightful crumb. The vanilla extract enhances the sweetness, making it a perfect canvas for various frosting options.

Old-Fashioned Butter Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened

How To Make Old-Fashioned Butter Cake:

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare Pans

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch x 2-inch baking pans and set them aside.

Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3: Add Wet Ingredients

  1. Add softened butter, milk, and vanilla to the dry ingredients.

Step 4: Beat the Batter

  1. Using a hand mixer, beat the mixture for 2 minutes, occasionally scraping down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing.

Step 5: Incorporate Eggs

  1. Add eggs to the batter and beat for an additional 2 minutes until the batter is smooth and well combined.

Step 6: Bake the Cake

  1. Pour the batter into the prepared pans, dividing it equally. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 7: Cool and Frost

  1. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a cooling rack to cool completely.
  2. Once cooled, frost the cakes with your favorite frosting. The recipe suggests a chocolate frosting, such as the one on the back of the Hershey’s cocoa can.

Tips:

  • Ensure the butter is softened to room temperature for easier incorporation into the batter.
  • Sifting the dry ingredients helps to achieve a lighter and fluffier cake texture.
  • Monitor the baking time closely, as it may vary depending on your oven. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean when the cake is done.
  • Experiment with different frosting flavors to customize the cake to your preferences. Whether it’s classic chocolate or a tangy cream cheese frosting, the options are endless.
