Indulge in the comforting nostalgia of this classic Old Fashioned Banana Pudding recipe. With layers of creamy custard, ripe bananas, and vanilla wafers, topped with a fluffy meringue, this dessert is a beloved favorite for gatherings and special occasions. The rich custard base, made from scratch with simple ingredients, creates a luscious texture that perfectly complements the sweet bananas and crunchy wafers. Topped with a golden meringue crust, this timeless dessert is sure to impress friends and family alike.

Ingredients:

  • Evaporated Milk: Provides richness and creaminess to the custard base.
  • Granulated Sugar: Sweetens the custard and balances the flavors.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Thickens the custard and helps create a smooth texture.
  • Salt: Enhances the flavor of the custard.
  • Egg Yolks: Add richness and help bind the custard together.
  • Half & Half: Adds creaminess to the custard mixture.
  • Butter: Contributes to the richness and adds flavor to the custard.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract: Provides aromatic flavor to the custard.
  • Vanilla Wafers: Classic cookies that add texture and flavor to the pudding layers.
  • Bananas: Ripe bananas add natural sweetness and a fruity flavor to the dessert.

Meringue:

  • Reserved Egg Whites: Used to create a light and fluffy meringue topping.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract: Enhances the flavor of the meringue.
  • Cream of Tartar: Stabilizes the egg whites and helps create a stiff meringue.
  • Granulated Sugar: Sweetens the meringue and helps create a glossy finish.

How To Make It:

  1. Prepare Custard: Whisk together evaporated milk, sugar, flour, and salt in a mixing bowl. Warm the mixture in a saucepan, then whisk in egg yolks and half & half. Cook until thickened, then stir in butter and vanilla extract.
  2. Layer Ingredients: Arrange vanilla wafers and sliced bananas in an oven-safe dish, then cover with half of the custard. Repeat the layers, ending with custard.
  3. Prepare Meringue: Whip reserved egg whites with vanilla extract and cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. Sweeten with sugar.
  4. Top and Bake: Spread the meringue over the pudding, then broil until golden brown.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Optionally, garnish the edges with additional vanilla wafers before chilling and serving.

Tips:

  • Ripeness of Bananas: Use ripe but firm bananas for the best flavor and texture in the pudding.
  • Custard Thickness: Ensure the custard is thickened properly to achieve the desired texture in the pudding layers.
  • Meringue Tips: Whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form to ensure a stable and fluffy meringue topping. Spread it evenly over the pudding to create an attractive finish.
  • Chilling: Allow the pudding to chill thoroughly before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the texture to set properly.
