Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers are a classic American comfort food, featuring juicy ground beef patties topped with crispy, caramelized onions. Originating in the Great Depression era as a way to stretch ground beef further, these burgers are simple yet incredibly flavorful. The onions are mixed directly into the beef patties, creating a deliciously moist and tender texture. Served on toasted hamburger buns with melted cheese, mayo, mustard, and pickles, these burgers are sure to satisfy any burger craving.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 4-8 slices American cheese
  • Mayo, mustard, and pickles, for serving
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Onions: Toss the sliced onions with salt and let sit for 30 minutes. Squeeze out excess liquid from the onions using a clean dish towel.
  2. Form Patties: Divide onions into 4 mounds on a baking sheet. Form ground beef into 4 balls and place on top of onion mounds. Flatten beef firmly so onions adhere to the beef, forming patties measuring 4 inches in diameter. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook Patties: Melt butter with oil in a skillet over medium heat. Transfer patties, onion side down, to the skillet. Cook for 6-8 minutes until onions are golden brown and crisp. Flip burgers and increase heat to high. Cook until well browned on the second side, about 2 minutes.
  4. Melt Cheese: Add cheese slices to each burger and allow to melt.
  5. Assemble Burgers: Spread mayo and mustard on the top buns. Place each burger on a bottom bun and top with pickles. Serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Use lean ground beef for juicier burgers and less shrinkage during cooking.
  • Don’t overcrowd the skillet to ensure even cooking and crisp onions.
  • Customize toppings to your preference, such as adding lettuce, tomato, or bacon.
  • Serve with a side of fries or coleslaw for a classic burger joint experience.
