Mama’s Cornbread Dressing is a classic Southern comfort food that’s perfect for any holiday feast or family gathering. This recipe combines crumbled cornbread with sautéed onions, celery, aromatic sage, eggs, and chicken stock to create a flavorful and comforting side dish. The dressing is baked until golden brown, resulting in a moist and savory dish that pairs wonderfully with roasted turkey, chicken, or ham.

Mama’s Cornbread Dressing

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups crumbled cornbread
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • ½ cup chopped celery
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups chicken stock
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage, or more to taste
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 7×11-inch baking dish. Place crumbled cornbread in a large bowl.
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and chopped celery, and sauté until soft, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  3. Add the sautéed onion and celery to the crumbled cornbread. Stir in chicken stock, beaten eggs, dried sage, salt, and pepper until well combined. Pour the dressing mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until the dressing just starts to turn golden brown around the edges, about 30 minutes.

Tips:

  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the cornbread and sauté the onions and celery ahead of time to save time on the day of baking. Store the components separately in the refrigerator and assemble the dressing just before baking.
  • Customize Flavors: Feel free to customize the dressing by adding ingredients like cooked sausage, chopped herbs, or diced apples for extra flavor and texture.
  • Adjust Seasonings: Taste the dressing mixture before baking and adjust the seasonings according to your preference. You can add more sage, salt, or pepper to suit your taste buds.
