Hot Chocolate Muddy Buddies are an irresistible sweet snack that combines the flavors of rich hot cocoa, creamy peanut butter, and crunchy Chex™ cereal. This easy-to-make treat is perfect for parties, movie nights, or even holiday gifts. Topped with powdered sugar and hot cocoa mix, and optionally loaded with marshmallows or crushed peppermint, this snack is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Ingredients:

  • 9 cups Rice Chex™, Corn Chex™, or Chocolate Chex™ cereal (or a combination)
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 3 individual serving packets of hot chocolate mix (about .73 oz. each)
  • Miniature marshmallows (optional)
  • Crushed peppermint (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cereal: Measure 9 cups of Chex™ cereal (you can mix varieties for a fun flavor blend) and place them in a large mixing bowl. Set aside.
  2. Melt the Chocolate Mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the milk chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute, then stir. Continue microwaving for an additional 30 seconds, or until the mixture is completely melted and smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Coat the Cereal: Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Chex™ cereal. Gently stir until all the cereal pieces are evenly coated.
  4. Add the Powdered Sugar and Hot Chocolate Mix: Transfer the coated cereal into a large resealable plastic bag. Add the powdered sugar and hot cocoa powder packets. Seal the bag and shake it well until the cereal is fully coated with the sugary mixture.
  5. Optional Add-ins: If you’d like to add an extra touch, toss in miniature marshmallows or crushed peppermint candies into the bag and shake again for even distribution.
  6. Cool and Store: Spread the coated Muddy Buddies on a sheet of wax paper to cool and harden. Once cooled, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for freshness.

Tips & Variations:

  • Chocolate Variety: You can use dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips if you prefer a richer chocolate flavor.
  • Peanut Butter Alternative: For a peanut-free version, substitute peanut butter with almond butter or sunflower seed butter.
  • Extra Crunch: Add crushed pretzels or salted nuts for a salty-sweet combo.
  • Holiday Twist: For festive flavors, top with crushed peppermint or use flavored hot cocoa mixes, like mint or caramel.

This fun, crunchy, and chocolatey snack is perfect for sharing, and the addition of marshmallows and peppermint gives it that cozy hot chocolate vibe!
