For the Sloppy Joe Sauce

  • ⅔ cup water
  • ½ cup tomato sauce
  • ½ green bell pepper, finely diced
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 ½ tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp salt (or more to taste)
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Instructions

1. Cook the Beef:
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic. Break the beef into small crumbles as it cooks until no pink remains. Drain any excess fat.

2. Make the Sauce:
Add the water, tomato sauce, green bell pepper, ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine.

3. Simmer the Sauce:
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and coats the beef.

4. Toast the Buns (Optional):
While the sauce is simmering, preheat your oven’s broiler. Brush the insides of the hamburger buns with butter or olive oil. Place them on a baking sheet and broil for 2–3 minutes until golden and crisp.

5. Assemble and Serve:
Spoon about ½ cup of the meat mixture onto each toasted bun. Serve immediately with your favorite side dishes like coleslaw, potato chips, or a crisp green salad.
