Homemade chicken and dumplings is a comforting and hearty dish that is perfect for a cozy family meal. Tender pieces of cooked chicken are simmered in a rich and flavorful broth, then topped with fluffy, homemade dumplings. This recipe is straightforward and uses simple ingredients to create a delicious and satisfying dish.

Ingredients:

  • Flour: Used to make the dough for the dumplings.
  • Baking Powder: Helps the dumplings rise and become light and fluffy.
  • Salt: Adds flavor to the dumplings.
  • Butter: Adds richness and flavor to the dumpling dough.
  • Milk: Moistens the dough and helps bring it together.
  • Chicken Broth: Forms the base of the soup and provides flavor for cooking the dumplings.
  • Cooked Chicken: Adds protein and heartiness to the dish.

How To Make Homemade Chicken and Dumplings:

  1. Start by combining the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk until a dough forms.
  2. Roll out the dough on a heavily floured surface until thin. Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut the dough into squares, about 2×2 inches in size.
  3. Bring the chicken broth to a boil in a large pot. Drop the dumplings into the boiling broth one at a time, stirring gently to prevent sticking.
  4. Cook the dumplings in the broth for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and no longer taste doughy.
  5. Add the cooked chicken to the pot and stir to combine. Serve the chicken and dumplings hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.

Tips:

  • Be generous with the flour when rolling out the dumpling dough and when adding the dumplings to the broth. This helps prevent sticking and ensures that the dumplings cook evenly.
  • Feel free to add additional seasonings to the broth for extra flavor. Garlic, onion, thyme, and bay leaves are all excellent options.
  • If you prefer, you can use leftover cooked turkey or even shredded rotisserie chicken in place of the cooked chicken.
