This classic Ham and Bean Soup is rich, savory, and bursting with comforting flavors, making it perfect for chilly days or a wholesome family meal. Using a meaty ham bone infuses the broth with smoky depth, while a blend of beans adds a hearty texture that fills you up. The slow-cooked combination of tender beans, ham, and seasonings comes together beautifully, creating a soup that’s both easy to make and deeply satisfying. Serve it with crusty bread to enjoy every last bit of this delicious broth.

Ingredients

  • 1 package HamBeens® 15 BEAN SOUP® with seasoning packet
  • 8 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth (or chicken stock)
  • 1 meaty ham bone or ham hocks (or 1 lb diced ham or cooked sausage)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional, for a hint of warmth)
  • 15 oz can diced tomatoes, with juices
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Hot sauce or red pepper flakes, to taste (optional for extra spice)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beans:
  • Rinse and drain the beans from the package. Check for any debris and set the seasoning packet aside.
  1. Combine Ingredients:
  • In a 6-quart slow cooker, add the beans, chicken broth, ham bone or hocks (if using), diced onion, garlic, and chili powder. Tip: Wait to add the lemon juice and tomatoes until after the beans have softened.
  1. Slow Cook:
  • Cook on high for 5 hours or on low for 7-8 hours, until the beans are fully tender.
  1. Prepare the Ham:
  • Once the beans are tender, remove the ham bone, chop any remaining meat from the bone, and add it back into the slow cooker.
  1. Add Final Ingredients:
  • Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juices), the reserved seasoning packet, and the lemon juice. Let the soup cook for an additional 30 minutes to blend the flavors.
  1. Season and Serve:
  • Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste, and garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot with your favorite bread for dipping.

Tips for Perfect Ham and Bean Soup

  • Choosing Meat: If you don’t have a ham bone, diced ham or smoked sausage also work well, giving the soup a different but equally delicious flavor.
  • Flavor Boosters: For a touch of heat, try adding red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce. The lemon juice brightens up the flavor, so don’t skip it!
  • Freeze Leftovers: This soup freezes well, making it a great option for meal prep. Let it cool, then store in individual containers for up to 3 months.

This Ham and Bean Soup is hearty, flavorful, and easy to prepare—perfect for a comforting meal that feels homemade, even on busy days.
