This Hawaiian-Style Chili blends the hearty flavors of classic chili with a tropical twist, thanks to the addition of sweet pineapple chunks. It’s a deliciously unique dish that balances savory and sweet, perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or game days. Serve it with rice or cornbread for a complete meal that will have everyone asking for seconds.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 6 onions, chopped
  • 2 red bell peppers, seeded and chopped
  • 2 (16-ounce) cans stewed tomatoes, with juice
  • 2 (15.5-ounce) cans kidney beans, with liquid
  • 1 (16-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (16-ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 1 hour

Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Servings: 6-8 servings

Instructions

  1. Cook the Ground Beef: In a large pot over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables: Add the chopped onions and red bell peppers to the pot. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.
  3. Add the Tomatoes and Beans: Stir in the stewed tomatoes (with juice), kidney beans (with liquid), and tomato sauce. Mix well to combine.
  4. Incorporate Pineapple and Seasonings: Add the drained pineapple chunks, chili powder, and salt. Stir everything together.
  5. Simmer the Chili: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the chili simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  6. Taste and Adjust: Taste the chili and adjust seasonings if needed. Serve hot over rice or with cornbread on the side.

Tips for Success

  • Use Fresh Pineapple: For an extra burst of flavor, use fresh pineapple instead of canned. Just make sure to chop it into small, even chunks.
  • Customize the Heat: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or diced jalapeño for a spicier kick, or reduce the chili powder for a milder version.
  • Mix Up the Beans: Swap kidney beans for black beans or pinto beans for variety.
  • Make It Ahead: This chili tastes even better the next day, as the flavors have more time to meld. Prepare it in advance and reheat when ready to serve.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Hawaiian-Style Chili is the perfect combination of comforting and tropical flavors. Whether you’re looking to switch up your usual chili recipe or try something new, this dish is guaranteed to impress!
