Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce is a comforting and classic dessert that brings back nostalgic memories of home-cooked goodness. This recipe features tender cubes of white bread soaked in a rich custard mixture, studded with plump raisins and a hint of nutmeg. Topped with a decadent vanilla sauce, this bread pudding is the epitome of comfort food.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups (8 slices) cubed white bread
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Bread Pudding: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish. In a large bowl, combine cubed bread and raisins. In a saucepan, heat milk and butter until butter is melted. Pour over bread mixture and let stand for 10 minutes. Stir in sugar, eggs, vanilla, and nutmeg. Pour into the prepared casserole dish and bake for 40 to 50 minutes until set in the center.
  2. Make Vanilla Sauce: In a saucepan, combine butter, sugar, brown sugar, and heavy whipping cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens and comes to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  3. Serve: Spoon warm bread pudding into individual dessert dishes and drizzle with vanilla sauce.
  4. Storage: Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.

Tips:

  • Use day-old or stale bread for the best texture in your bread pudding.
  • Customize the recipe by adding other mix-ins such as chocolate chips, dried cranberries, or nuts.
  • Serve the bread pudding warm for a comforting treat, or chill it in the refrigerator and serve cold on a hot day.
  • The vanilla sauce can be made ahead of time and reheated before serving. Adjust the consistency by adding more cream for a thinner sauce or cooking longer for a thicker sauce.
