French Toast Bake offers all the comforting flavors of traditional French toast in a convenient and crowd-friendly format. This make-ahead dish is perfect for busy mornings or when entertaining guests, as it can be prepared the night before and baked in the morning. The combination of buttery brown sugar, custardy bread, and warming spices creates a deliciously indulgent breakfast treat that is sure to please everyone at the table.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup melted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 loaf of thickly sliced bread
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for sprinkling
  • Cinnamon for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Base: Melt butter in the microwave and mix it with brown sugar until well combined. Pour this mixture into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking pan, spreading it evenly.
  2. Layer the Bread: Arrange thick slices of bread in a single layer over the butter and sugar mixture in the pan.
  3. Mix the Custard: In a separate bowl, beat together eggs, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Assemble the Bake: Pour half of the egg mixture over the bread layer in the pan. Sprinkle some cinnamon over the bread and eggs for a touch of warmth and flavor. Add another layer of sliced bread on top, then pour the remaining egg mixture over it.
  5. Chill Overnight: Cover the pan and refrigerate overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the bread to soak up the custard mixture, ensuring a moist and flavorful bake.
  6. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the French Toast for 45 minutes, covering it with foil for the first 30 minutes to prevent excessive browning.
  7. Serve: Once baked, sprinkle the French Toast Bake with powdered sugar and cinnamon for a delightful finishing touch. Serve warm with maple syrup for a classic and comforting breakfast experience.

Tips:

  • Use thickly sliced bread, such as French or brioche bread, for a hearty and satisfying texture.
  • Allow the French Toast Bake to chill overnight in the refrigerator to ensure the bread fully absorbs the custard mixture, resulting in a moist and flavorful dish.
  • Serve with a variety of toppings, such as fresh fruit, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce, to customize the dish to your taste preferences.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated in the oven or microwave for a quick and delicious breakfast throughout the week.
