The Decadent Old Fashioned Fudge Recipe is a classic treat made with simple ingredients like chocolate, butter, and condensed milk, resulting in rich, creamy fudge that melts in your mouth. Perfect for satisfying any sweet tooth craving!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons Hershey’s cocoa
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter
  • 5-ounce can Carnation Evaporated Milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Nuts (optional, for added crunch)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Pan: Before diving into the recipe, line an 8×8 inch pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it. This step ensures easy removal of the fudge once it’s set.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a heavy saucepan, whisk together 2 cups of sugar and 4 tablespoons of Hershey’s cocoa until they are thoroughly mixed.
  3. Add Butter and Milk: Into the sugar and cocoa mixture, add 1 stick of salted butter (1/2 cup) and the 5-ounce can of Carnation Evaporated Milk. These ingredients form the foundation of the fudge’s rich flavor and creamy texture.
  4. Cook and Stir: Over medium heat, continuously stir the mixture until it reaches a rolling boil. Allow it to boil for approximately 3-4 minutes, aiming for a soft ball stage. To test this, drop a small amount of the mixture into cold water; if it forms a soft ball, it’s ready.
  5. Incorporate Vanilla: Once removed from heat, stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. This addition enhances the fudge’s flavor profile, adding depth and complexity.
  6. Optional Nuts: For those who enjoy a bit of crunch, fold nuts into the mixture at this stage. They complement the creamy texture of the fudge wonderfully.
  7. Set and Cool: Pour the fudge mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the surface with a spatula. Allow it to cool for several hours, preferably overnight, to ensure it sets properly.
  8. Final Touch: Once fully set, lift the fudge out of the pan using the parchment paper and transfer it to a cutting board. With a sharp knife, cut it into squares, ready to be enjoyed!

Tips:

  • Use High-Quality Ingredients: Opt for high-quality cocoa and vanilla extract to enhance the flavor of your fudge.
  • Watch the Boiling: Keep an eye on the mixture as it boils, stirring constantly to prevent burning and ensure even cooking.
  • Test for Consistency: The soft ball stage is crucial for achieving the perfect texture. Use the cold water test to determine when the fudge is ready.
  • Patience is Key: Allowing the fudge to cool and set properly ensures the best texture and flavor. Resist the temptation to cut into it too soon!
  • Customize with Nuts: Experiment with different types of nuts or omit them altogether according to your preference.
