Buttermilk pie is a classic Southern dessert, loved for its creamy, custard-like texture and tangy sweetness. This pie combines a rich buttermilk filling with hints of vanilla and lemon, all baked to golden perfection in a flaky crust. Simple yet decadent, it’s the kind of dessert that brings comfort with every bite. Enjoy it on its own, or with a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat!

Ingredients

  • 1 single pie crust (unbaked, store-bought or homemade)
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (freshly grated)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare the Crust
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a 9-inch pie plate with the unbaked pie crust, pressing it gently into the edges.
  1. Make the Filling
  • In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs until foamy, then add in the softened butter, sugar, and flour. Beat until light and fluffy.
  • Mix in the buttermilk, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and nutmeg, along with a small pinch of salt. Continue mixing until the filling is smooth.
  1. Assemble and Bake
  • Pour the buttermilk mixture into the prepared pie crust. Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean and the pie is set with a golden top.
  1. Cool and Serve
  • Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Serve on its own, or with whipped cream for an added treat.

Tips for the Perfect Buttermilk Pie

  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Make sure the eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature for a smoother, creamier filling.
  • Nutmeg Variation: Freshly grated nutmeg adds warmth and depth, but ground nutmeg can work in a pinch!
  • Baking Tip: Check the pie at the 45-minute mark; if the crust is browning too quickly, cover the edges with foil to prevent over-browning.

This buttermilk pie is easy to make yet beautifully elegant—a dessert that truly shines on any occasion!
