This Classic Pea Salad is a timeless side dish that brings together a medley of textures and flavors. The creamy dressing, composed of sour cream, mayonnaise, and a hint of sweetness from sugar, perfectly coats the tender peas, crispy bacon, savory cheddar cheese, and the bite of red onion. This dish is a delightful addition to picnics, barbecues, or any meal that craves a touch of nostalgia.

Classic Pea Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste as needed
  • 4 cups frozen peas, thawed
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2 medium red onion, diced
  • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, cubed small

Instructions:

  1. Creamy Dressing Creation:
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, sugar, apple cider vinegar, and salt until a creamy and flavorful dressing is formed.
  1. Pea Party:
  • Add the thawed peas, crumbled bacon, diced red onion, and cubed cheddar cheese to the bowl. Gently stir the ingredients to ensure they are well-coated in the delectable dressing.
  1. Chill and Marinate:
  • Refrigerate the pea salad until ready to serve, allowing the flavors to mingle and intensify. A minimum of 1 hour of chilling time is recommended to achieve the best taste.
  1. Bacon Finale:
  • Just before serving, garnish the pea salad with additional crispy bacon if desired. This adds an extra layer of texture and smokiness to the dish.

Tips:

  • Use fresh or high-quality frozen peas for the best taste and texture.
  • Experiment with different cheese varieties like sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, or even a creamy blue cheese for a personalized twist.
  • Allow the salad to sit in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight to let the flavors meld and develop.
  • Adjust the salt to taste just before serving, as bacon and cheese can contribute varying levels of saltiness.
  • Customize the salad by adding diced bell peppers, celery, or fresh herbs for added freshness and crunch.
