Simple to make and packed with flavor, it’s a crowd-pleaser that’s sure to become a favorite at your table.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups frozen cut green beans, thawed (see notes for using canned or fresh beans)
  • 10.5 ounces condensed cream of mushroom soup (1 can)
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon seasoned salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1 ½ cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven
    • Set your oven to 350°F.
  2. Prepare the Green Beans
    • If using fresh or frozen green beans, boil them in salted water for 3-5 minutes until they are tender-crisp. Drain and set aside. (Skip this step for canned green beans.)
  3. Mix the Casserole Ingredients
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the green beans, condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, seasoned salt, and 1 cup of crispy fried onions. Stir until well mixed. (Optional: Add shredded cheese for an extra creamy casserole.)
  4. Assemble the Casserole
    • Transfer the mixture to a greased 2-quart or 8×8-inch baking dish. Spread it evenly for consistent cooking.
  5. Bake the Casserole
    • Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and bubbly.
  6. Add the Crispy Topping
    • Remove the casserole from the oven, stir gently, and top with the remaining crispy fried onions. Return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown.
  7. Serve and Enjoy
    • Let the casserole cool slightly before serving. Enjoy this creamy, crunchy delight as a side dish with your favorite meals!

Tips for the Perfect Green Bean Casserole

  • Fresh vs. Frozen vs. Canned Beans:
    • Fresh: Trim and cut into 1-inch pieces; boil until tender-crisp.
    • Frozen: Thaw before mixing.
    • Canned: Drain well; no need to cook beforehand.
  • Customize the Flavor:
    • Add a pinch of garlic powder or a dash of Worcestershire sauce for added depth.
    • Incorporate ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese into the mixture for a richer casserole.
  • Crunch Factor:
    • Use additional crispy fried onions or breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter for a heartier topping.
  • Make-Ahead Tip:
    • Assemble the casserole without the topping and store it covered in the fridge for up to a day. Add the crispy onions just before baking.

This casserole is a perfect balance of creamy, savory, and crunchy, making it a classic addition to any meal. Whether it’s a special occasion or a weeknight dinner, this dish never disappoints!
