Caramel corn is a classic sweet treat that combines the irresistible crunch of popcorn with a sticky, sweet caramel coating. This homemade version of caramel corn is easy to make and yields a deliciously addictive snack that’s perfect for enjoying during movie nights, parties, or as a special treat any time of the year. With just a few simple ingredients and straightforward steps, you can create a batch of caramel corn that’s sure to be a hit with friends and family.

Ingredients:

  • Plain Popped Popcorn: Provides the base for the caramel corn.
  • Dry Roasted Peanuts (Optional): Adds a crunchy texture and nutty flavor to the caramel corn.
  • Brown Sugar: Sweetens and caramelizes to create the signature caramel coating.
  • Light Corn Syrup: Helps prevent crystallization and adds sweetness.
  • Salt: Enhances the flavor and balances the sweetness of the caramel.
  • Margarine: Provides richness and helps bind the caramel mixture.
  • Baking Soda: Helps aerate the caramel mixture, resulting in a lighter texture.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds flavor and aroma to the caramel.

How To Make Caramel Corn:

  1. Spread popped popcorn and peanuts (if using) onto greased baking pans.
  2. Preheat the oven and combine brown sugar, corn syrup, margarine, and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  3. Boil the mixture for 5 minutes, then remove from heat and stir in baking soda and vanilla.
  4. Immediately pour the caramel mixture over the popcorn in the pans and stir to coat.
  5. Bake the caramel corn, stirring every 15 minutes, until golden and crisp.
  6. Spread the caramel corn onto waxed paper to cool, then break apart any large clumps.

Tips:

  • Use caution when working with hot caramel as it can cause burns. Handle the caramel mixture carefully and supervise children if they’re helping.
  • Customize your caramel corn by adding other mix-ins like chocolate chips, pretzels, or dried fruit.
  • Store caramel corn in an airtight container or resealable bags to maintain freshness. Enjoy within a few days for the best taste and texture.
  • Experiment with different flavor variations by adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to the caramel mixture.
