Buttermilk pie is a classic Southern dessert known for its creamy, custard-like filling and subtle tang from the buttermilk. This pie is easy to make and boasts a rich, sweet flavor with a hint of nutmeg and lemon. Perfect for any occasion, it delivers comfort and nostalgia with every bite.

Ingredients (Servings: 8):

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  1. Prepare the Filling:
  • In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs until frothy.
  • Add the sugar, softened butter, and flour to the eggs, and beat until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  1. Add Remaining Ingredients:
  • Stir in the buttermilk, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and freshly grated nutmeg until fully incorporated.
  1. Assemble the Pie:
  • Pour the prepared filling into the unbaked 9-inch pie crust.
  1. Bake the Pie:
  • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 60 minutes, or until the center is firm. The top should be lightly browned, and the center should still jiggle slightly. It will continue to set as it cools.
  1. Cool and Serve:
  • Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 1 hour before serving.

Tips:

  • Preventing Over-Browning: If the edges of your pie crust begin to brown too quickly, cover them with foil for the remainder of the baking time to prevent burning.
  • Check for Doneness: To check if the pie is done, lightly shake it to see if the center jiggles slightly. It should not be liquidy but will set as it cools. For an extra check, insert a toothpick into the center of the pie. If it comes out mostly clean, the pie is ready.
  • Serving: Serve the buttermilk pie chilled or at room temperature. It pairs wonderfully with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Enjoy this delightful, creamy, and tangy buttermilk pie as a comforting dessert that brings a touch of Southern charm to your table!
