Boston Cream Pie is a classic American dessert featuring a moist yellow cake filled with creamy vanilla pudding and topped with a rich chocolate glaze. Despite its name, it’s actually a cake and not a pie. This delightful treat is perfect for special occasions or simply to satisfy a sweet craving. The combination of soft cake, smooth filling, and glossy chocolate makes every bite irresistible.

Ingredients

  • For the Cake:
  • 1 yellow cake mix (and ingredients called for on the package)
  • For the Filling:
  • 1 cup cold milk
  • 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding
  • 1 1/2 cups Cool Whip or homemade whipped cream
  • For the Chocolate Glaze:
  • 1 (1 ounce) square unsweetened baking chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake:
  • Preheat the oven according to the cake mix package directions.
  • Prepare the cake mix as per the package instructions.
  • Line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper or generously spray them with cooking spray. Ensuring the cakes don’t stick to the pans is crucial.
  • Bake the cakes according to package directions until they are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Once baked, let the cakes cool in the pans for a few minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  1. Make the Filling:
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup of cold milk and the instant pudding mix for 2 minutes until well combined.
  • Gently fold in the whipped cream. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes to thicken.
  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread the pudding mixture evenly over it. Top with the second cake layer.
  1. Prepare the Chocolate Glaze:
  • In a small microwave-safe bowl, microwave the chocolate and butter on high for 1 minute. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted.
  • Add the powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of milk, mixing until smooth.
  • Immediately spread the glaze over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
  1. Chill and Serve:
  • Refrigerate the assembled Boston Cream Pie for at least one hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the glaze to set.
  • Slice and enjoy!

Tips

  • Cake Preparation: Ensuring the cake doesn’t stick to the pans is crucial. Use parchment paper or a generous amount of cooking spray to line the pans.
  • Filling: Folding in the whipped cream gently into the pudding mix ensures a light and fluffy texture for the filling.
  • Chocolate Glaze: Prepare the glaze just before spreading to ensure it has the right consistency to drip beautifully down the sides.
  • Serving: Chilling the cake before serving helps the flavors develop and makes the cake easier to slice.

Enjoy this classic Boston Cream Pie with its delightful layers of cake, creamy filling, and rich chocolate glaze for a truly indulgent dessert!
