Banana pudding is a classic Southern dessert loved for its creamy texture, comforting flavors, and nostalgic appeal. This recipe combines layers of ripe bananas, creamy homemade pudding, and a fluffy meringue topping, all nestled between layers of vanilla wafers. It’s a delightful treat that’s perfect for any occasion, from family gatherings to potluck dinners. With its simple yet delicious ingredients, this banana pudding recipe is sure to become a favorite in your home.

Ingredients:

  • Bananas: Provide natural sweetness and flavor to the pudding.
  • Pudding Ingredients:
  • Sugar, Flour, Salt: Form the base of the pudding and contribute to its sweetness and consistency.
  • Whole Egg, Egg Yolks: Help bind the pudding together and add richness.
  • Milk: Provides creaminess and helps create a smooth pudding texture.
  • Vanilla: Adds flavor and enhances the overall taste of the pudding.
  • Crust:
  • Vanilla Wafers: Create a crunchy and flavorful base for the pudding layers.
  • Meringue:
  • Egg Whites, Sugar: Whip up into a fluffy meringue topping that adds sweetness and a light texture to the dessert.

How To Make It:

  1. Prepare Pudding: Combine sugar, flour, salt, whole egg, milk, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat until thickened, then stir in vanilla.
  2. Layer Crust: Line a casserole dish with vanilla wafers. Slice bananas over the wafers, then pour half of the pudding over them.
  3. Add More Layers: Add another layer of sliced bananas and pour the remaining pudding over them.
  4. Make Meringue: Whip egg whites until stiff peaks form, then gradually add sugar and continue mixing until blended.
  5. Top and Bake: Spread meringue over the pudding mixture and bake until golden brown.
  6. Chill and Serve: Let the pudding cool in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving to allow it to set and thicken.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe but firm bananas for the best flavor and texture in the pudding.
  • Make sure to continuously stir the pudding mixture while cooking to prevent lumps and ensure a smooth consistency.
  • Allow the pudding to cool completely in the refrigerator before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the texture to set.
  • For added flavor, you can sprinkle ground cinnamon or nutmeg over the meringue before baking.
  • Enjoy the banana pudding on its own or with a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.
