These apple dumplings are a beloved classic, cherished for their soft crust and delectable sauce. Perfect for dessert, they feature tender apple slices enveloped in a sweet biscuit dough and bathed in a warm cinnamon-sugar syrup. This recipe, with its simple ingredients and straightforward instructions, yields delightful results every time.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 canned buttermilk biscuits
  • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

How To Make Apple Dumplings:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples into 8 vertical slices each. To prevent browning, soak the apple slices in a bowl of water with lemon juice.
  3. Prepare the sugar mixture: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup water, 3/4 cup sugar, butter, and vanilla. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  4. Prepare the dumplings: Separate each biscuit into 2 layers. Wrap each apple slice with a biscuit layer, slightly stretching the dough to overlap and seal at the bottom. Arrange the wrapped slices, sealed-side down, in a baking dish.
  5. Pour the sugar mixture: Pour the hot sugar mixture over the apple dumplings in the baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar: Mix the remaining 1/4 cup sugar with ground cinnamon and sprinkle the mixture over the tops of the wrapped apples.
  7. Bake: Bake the dumplings until golden brown, about 35 minutes.
  8. Serve: Enjoy the warm apple dumplings straight from the oven, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Tips:

  • Choose firm and tart apples like Granny Smith for the best texture and flavor in your dumplings.
  • Make sure to seal the biscuit dough securely around the apple slices to prevent any filling from leaking out during baking.
  • Feel free to customize the sweetness and spice level of the syrup by adjusting the amount of sugar and cinnamon to your taste preferences.
  • Serve these delightful apple dumplings as a comforting dessert for any occasion, and watch them disappear quickly from the table!
