Take a trip back to hearty, home-cooked traditions with Amish Poor Man’s Steak. This budget-friendly dish transforms simple pantry staples into a comforting meal that’s rich in flavor. Tender ground beef patties, pan-seared to perfection, are baked in a creamy mushroom gravy, making every bite irresistibly satisfying. Served over mashed potatoes or egg noodles, it’s the ultimate down-home comfort food perfect for feeding the whole family.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup cracker crumbs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can water or broth

Instructions

1. Prepare the Beef Loaf:
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, milk, cracker crumbs, salt, pepper, and finely chopped onion. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture.

2. Shape and Chill:
Shape the beef mixture into a loaf and place it on a plate or in a baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

3. Slice and Dredge:
Remove the chilled loaf from the fridge and slice into ½-inch thick slices or form patties. Lightly dredge each slice in flour, shaking off excess.

4. Pan-Fry the Patties:
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil. Pan-fry the beef slices until browned on both sides (they don’t need to be fully cooked as they’ll finish in the oven). Transfer the browned slices to a baking dish.

5. Make the Gravy:
In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and 1 can of water or broth until smooth. Pour this mixture over the beef slices in the baking dish.

6. Bake:
Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 1 hour, or until the sauce thickens and the beef is tender.

7. Serve:
Serve the steak slices smothered in gravy over creamy mashed potatoes or buttery egg noodles for a comforting meal.

Tips for Success

  • Cracker Crumbs: Use buttery crackers like Ritz for extra flavor, or substitute with plain breadcrumbs if needed.
  • Chill for Flavor: Letting the beef loaf chill overnight helps the flavors meld and makes slicing easier.
  • Custom Gravy: Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of garlic powder to the gravy for added depth.
  • Vegetable Additions: Include sautéed mushrooms or onions in the gravy for extra texture and flavor.
  • Leftover Friendly: This dish reheats beautifully and even tastes better the next day as the flavors continue to meld.
