7-Minute Frosting is a classic and versatile frosting that adds a light and fluffy texture to cakes and desserts. It gets its name from the short cooking time required to create a smooth and glossy frosting. Made with simple ingredients like sugar, egg whites, and vanilla extract, this frosting is perfect for decorating layer cakes, cupcakes, or any baked treat that needs a sweet and airy topping.

Ingredients:

  • Sugar: Provides sweetness and structure to the frosting.
  • Cold Water: Helps to dissolve the sugar and create a smooth texture.
  • Egg Whites: Add stability and volume to the frosting.
  • Salt: Enhances the flavor of the frosting.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds a hint of vanilla flavor for depth.
  • Cream of Tartar: Helps stabilize the egg whites and create a fluffy texture.

How To Make 7-Minute Frosting:

  1. In a medium glass bowl, combine the sugar, cold water, cream of tartar, egg whites, and salt.
  2. Set up a double boiler by placing a saucepan filled with water over low heat to simmer.
  3. Using an electric mixer on low speed, beat the egg mixture for 30 seconds to combine.
  4. Place the bowl over the saucepan of simmering water (double boiler) and increase the heat to high. Beat the mixture on high speed for up to seven minutes or until the frosting becomes rigid and light.
  5. Remove the bowl from the heat and add the vanilla extract. Continue mixing for an additional 2 minutes until the vanilla is fully incorporated.
  6. The frosting sets rapidly, so use it immediately to frost cakes or desserts.

Tips and Variations:

  • Ensure that the bottom of the glass bowl does not touch the simmering water in the double boiler to prevent the frosting from overheating or curdling.
  • For a twist on classic vanilla frosting, add different extracts such as almond, lemon, or orange for a variety of flavors.
  • If the frosting becomes too stiff while mixing, you can add a tablespoon of warm water and continue beating until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • Decorate cakes with additional sprinkles, fresh fruit, or chocolate shavings to add color and texture to the frosting.
  • Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Allow it to come to room temperature and re-whip before using.
